Diaper Cakes

Diaper Cakes are not only cute to look at, but very useful too. Depending on what you put in them.

Diaper cakes have become pretty popular but some people don't even know where to start when making one.

Have made and sold a few. I will give you some pointers on what I include in the one's I like to make.

-Diapers, I normally like to use size 1 or 2 because the person you will be giving it to will probably already have plenty of newborn size.
-I use clear rubber bands
-Wide Ribbon
-A cake circle for the bottom ( used to normally hold cakes, can find at walmart)
-I use a plastic gift bag Very large size and clear. (can find at local craft store)
-A baby blanket, I make mine home made, but store bought one's will work too.
- A small to medium size stuffed animal.

Any other gifts you wish to include in the diaper cake.

You first start off laying the cake circle down then rolling each diaper and wrapping the clear rubber band around it. After you have rolled the diapers roll the baby blanket and place it in the middle of the cake circle. Afterwards place each diaper around the blanket keep going till you hit the edge of the cake circle. You have now completed your bottom layer.

You should still have the top part of the baby blanket sticking out of the middle. Repeat the diaper rolling process and wrap them around the baby blanket. This time you will not reach the edge with the bottom layer, you will stop a few inches before reaching the edge. You have now completed your second layer.

Repeat the process again to complete the last layer, and you will have now completely formed your diaper cake, with a blanket hidden in the middle. The top layer should rise a little above the blanket so there is a small hole/nest area in the middle on the top layer.

Now just wrap the wide ribbon around each layer and make a bow in the mid/front where you wish the main display to be.
Place the stuff animal in the hole/nest area on the top layer to where it is snuggled in there, but not completely hidden. This makes it to where the animal does not fall off.

You can now place flowers, feathers, ribbons, and/or other decorations you wish to put on the diaper cake.
Now you will finish it up by placing the rest of the gifts on it, such as shoes, rattles, and burp clothes.

Now here are a few things I have added to my diaper cakes.

I like to make roses out of the wash clothes and stick them around the base of the each layer. You can do this rolling each cloth and sticking the clear rubber band in the middle of the rolled up cloth. Then you will slowly start pulling the layers of one end apart to spread them out and make them look like roses.

For a baby girl, it's cute to add a tiny tiara to the top of the cake around the stuffed animal.

For a unisex cake, I like to use a light blue burp cloth, roll it up and almost like the rose but layers should be further apart, and stick it in the nest of the top layer, where its sticking out wave like of the nest. It should look like water waves. Then place a large size rubber ducky in the nest part, but it should still be seen fairly well. If you find it difficult to use the burp cloth you can use a blue teething ring instead and place it around the duck.

Keep checking back, I will soon have more pictures to put up of my diaper cakes.
